Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning. A 32-foot boat was found turned over off the coast of Miami after crashing into a jetty off Government Cut off Miami Beach.
Fernandez was one of three people killed in the accident. Two victims were found under the boat, while one was in the water. Authorities believe speed was a factor, and there was no immediate sign of alcohol or substances.
Authorities say the boat was owned by a personal friend of Jose Fernandez, who was close with several members of the Marlins. Fernandez was the only athlete involved. Authorities say the owner of that boat was familiar with that area and frequents the coast with Marlins players.
The Marlins have canceled Sundays game against the Atlanta Braves
"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."
Jose Fernandez was originally scheduled to start Sunday, but saw his start pushed back to Monday against the Atlanta Braves. The Miami Dolphins will hold a moment of silence prior to their game Sunday afternoon.
Fernandez defected from Cuba in 2008 after three prior attempts that were unsuccessful. He was the Miami Marlins first round pick in 2011 straight out of high school.
He had recently become a United States citizen, and announced just last week his girlfriend was pregnant.
Fernandez was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA this season after being named to his second All-Star game. The National League Rookie of the Year in 2013, Fernandez had a career record of 38-17 with a 2.58 ERA. In 2014 he underwent Tommy John surgery, and returned in July of the following season.
