Phillies Win, Save Season For One More Day

Today the Phillies held on to beat the Braves 7-3. In doing so, they won the series and SAVED THE SEASON.

That is right Phillies fans, the season is back on! Well that is until they lose. Then, of course, it is time to panic about reality again.  Until then, let us bask in the glory of beating the Atlanta Braves, the whiniest team in baseball.

Jonathan Pettibone continued to be pretty good without any real explanation.  He allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings while striking out six.  Another seven of his outs came via the ground ball. His season ERA sits at 3.84.  Most importantly is Tom McCarthy has taken to putting so much emphasis on the first syllable of Jonathan’s last name, that his actual pitching performance seems insignificant, petty even.

At the plate the Phillies were even more enjoyable to watch. Domonic Brown, fresh off his first ever All Star selection, continued to hit like he is from outer space, which I think is what All Star means.   Brown hit a triple in the first inning that plated Chase Utley.  Brown then scored on a Delmon Young single.

The Phillies would score two more runs on a Ben Revere triple in the fourth inning.  Triples can get pretty boring though.  That is why in the fifth inning Brown hit his 23rd home run of the year, giving a 5-1 lead to the team he has been carrying all season.  If you haven’t purchased a Domonic Brown shirsey yet, you should probably do that.

The other Jonathan P. pitcher threw a scoreless ninth inning and struck out one. How two H-less Jonathan’s ended up on this team, I will never know.

Tomorrow the Phillies start a three game series against the Washington Nationals. Win and there is still meaningful baseball left to be played. Lose and Chase Utley gets traded.
