Lab0r day weekend is considered the last weekend of summer.  The holiday is dedicated to the contributions of the American worker and it became a holiday in 1894.  Because of communist overtones the name of the holiday was changed from international workers day to labor day by then president Grover Cleveland.  The Phillies ended summer with this and this.

I have spoken at length on the interwebs that my hatred for the Florida Marlins stems from their inception, spurred by my intense dislike for Charlie Hough and his stupid cigarette smoking face.  How in the hell did this abhorrent franchise win two world series championships and how in the hell did they get a new stadium when no one watches them play?  This disaster of a franchise took two of three games from the Phillies this weekend.

Cole Hamels looks like he is okay.  He gave up a few home runs during his start on Saturday night, but he mostly resembled the guy that has pitched to a 13-7 record this season.  He has allowed six hits in his last two starts and has quieted concerns about his inflamed shoulder.  The Phillies had a lead in this game.  Wilson Valdez and Cole Hamels both drove in two runs to hand a 4-3 lead to the bullpen.  Antonio Bastardo has been one of the best relievers in baseball this season.  He responded by walking the two batters that he faced and handed the ball to David Herndon.  Herndon had been riding a recent wave of competency leading all of us to wonder when the cruel mistress of reality would show her face.  Herndon gave up three home runs, obviously allowing both inherited runners to score and in the process made Greg Dobbs look like a smart acquisition by the Marlins organization.  I chalked this one up to a bad appearance by the bullpen leading to a fluke victory by an awful baseball team.

Sunday’s game appeared to be a pretty significant mismatch as Roy Halladay pitched against Ricky Nolasco.  Little did everyone know that Joe West would fuck everything up.  Hunter Pence hit a ball that didn’t appear to be replayable and Joe West, who has coincidentally invented baseball, decided it was.  Joe West releases country and western albums and is universally noted asshole.  He is also major league baseball’s most senior umpire and is president of the World Umpires Association.  The game was played under protest and Joe West has changed his story a whole bunch of times since the controversial call.  Let me see if I can put this delicately…..go fuck yourself Joe West.

David Herndon earned the loss even though he did not allow a home run.  I think these two games gave us way too much Herndon for one series.

Next up Cliff Lee goes against the Braves and Derek Lowe.
