No. 2: Trea Turner, 3.9 fWAR

Sitting in the No. 2 slot on this list is one of the Phillies’ biggest investments so far this decade in shortstop Trea Turner. Even since he signed a massive 11-year, $300 million contract with Philadelphia during the 2022-23 offseason, Turner was expected to play a significant role in contributing to the team’s success going forward.

After starting off slow with the Phillies during the first half in 2023, he has sure picked up his game ever since. Had it not been for a hamstring injury that sidelined him for over six weeks this past season, Turner likely would have put up some bigger numbers. Nevertheless, he still managed to hit .295 with an .807 OPS, with 88 runs scored, 25 doubles, 21 home runs, 62 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 121 games during his 2024 All-Star season.

Turner did have a little more difficulty in the field this past year, registering a -14 DRS while committing 17 errors for just a .962 fielding percentage. However, it still wasn’t enough to drag his overall fWAR value down too much based on the impact he had provided at the plate and on the basepaths. Turner will look to continue to deliver for the Phillies in the coming years with still another nine years to go in his contract.

No. 1: Bryce Harper, 5.2 fWAR

Perhaps coming as a surprise to no one, the Phillies’ top position player MVP goes to none other than first baseman Bryce Harper. Harper put together another All-Star campaign in 2024 when he batted a stellar .285 with an .898 OPS, along with 85 runs scored, 42 doubles, 30 home runs and 87 RBI in 145 games played. With impressive offensive numbers like that, he also earned a Silver Slugger Award, along with finishing sixth in the NL MVP voting.

But Harper’s impact on the game goes beyond just his bat. He remained a threat on the basepaths despite being on the wrong side of 30, going 7-for-11 in stolen bases in 2024. More significantly, he has rapidly developed into a defensive wizard since making the move to first base last year. Harper registered +5 DRS, a sparkling .996 fielding percentage, along with +8 OAA to rank in the 93rd percentile in the league last year. In doing so, he was deservingly named a Gold Glove finalist this past season.

On top of that, Harper was one of the rare Phillies that managed to still show up during the playoffs, as he hit .333 with a 1.279 OPS, along with three runs scored, two doubles, one home run, three RBI, five walks and five strikeouts in 12 total at-bats. As the leader of the team, the Phillies will look to Harper to continue to lead the way, with hopes that he will eventually lead them to the promised land.
