The Phillies should non-tender Travis Jankowski and/or Roman Quinn

Travis Jankowski is only projected to get $900K in arbitration this offseason, but the Phillies’ money would be better spent elsewhere, like building a better outfield team around Bryce Harper.

The 30-year-old Jankowski put up his best slash line since 2018, hitting .252/.364/.351 with a  .715 OPS. However, he only played in 76 games compared to 117 in 2018, filling in for the injured Roman Quinn.

Ultimately, Jankowski’s offensive production isn’t enough to make him vital, nor will he be a difference-maker. In his early playing years, Jankowski was known for his speed on the base paths and high stolen-base numbers. He stole 30 bases in 2016 and 24 in 2018. However, he only stole five bases for the Phillies this season.

Quinn, meanwhile, has battled injuries ever since his big-league debut with the Phillies in September 2016. He’s had multiple oblique strains, a UCL injury, torn ligaments, fractures, a groin strain, and this season, a ruptured Achilles tendon.

If it comes down to Quinn or Jankowski, Quinn is injury-prone but more affordable and younger. Expect the Phillies to non-tender at least one of them.
