How did Jean Segura perform for the Phillies in 2021?

There were very few constants during another up and down campaign in which the Philadelphia Phillies went 82-80 and missed the playoffs for the tenth straight season.

Among the obvious were Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, and to a lesser extent, J.T. Realmuto. One player who may be overlooked but had a very productive season was second baseman, Jean Segura.

The 31-year-old Segura started his third season with the Phillies hitting .333 for the opening month. He had six multiple-hit games, a home run, and five RBI. After going 7-for-9 in the first two games in May against the Braves, Segura was batting a hefty .391 for the season.  Four more multiple-hit games followed the rest of the month. All told, Segura hit .310 with five doubles, two home runs, and seven RBI in May.

Segura continued his hot hitting in June, particularly during a three-game stretch from June 10-12 when he went 9-for-15 with seven RBI. He had a .340 batting average with an OPS of .851 for the month.  He cooled off in terms of batting average in July, hitting a modest .269, but had eight extra-base hits including three home runs and 12 RBI.

The power surge continued the rest of the way for Segura, belting eight home runs combined in August and September, to go along with 11 doubles and 25 RBI. He finished the season with a .290 average, 27 doubles, 14 home runs, and 58 RBI. His batting average was the highest in his three seasons with the Phillies, and his home run total was the most since 2016 when he hit 20 for the Diamondbacks.

Defensively, Segura made 11 errors with a fielding percentage of .981. His DWAR of 0.8 was his highest with the Phillies and highest since 2018.  Although not spectacular in the field, Segura was certainly above average defensively and the top infielder on the Phillies roster.

Overall, Segura was one of the most consistent players at the plate and in the field for the Phillies this season.

Jean Segura’s 2021 grade: B+
