Didi Gregorius’ contract looks like another Phillies mistake

Didi Gregorius is one of my favorite players, so it hurts to say that he has disappointed this year with the Phillies.

Only playing in 86 games, he’s hitting a career-low .219 with the second-worst on-base percentage of his career. His slugging is somewhere in the middle of his career numbers, but on the whole, it has been such a rough season for him that the Phillies went out and traded to get Freddy Galvis back from the Baltimore Orioles at the deadline.

Gregorius is one plate appearance away from his 2019 total with the Yankees, but has five fewer home runs, 17 fewer RBI, and seven more strikeouts.

2020 was Gregorius’ first season with the Phillies, and he appeared in all 60 games, slashing .284/.339/.488 with a .827 OPS, 10 home runs, and 40 RBI. He has only managed 11 home runs in 86 games this year; Galvis has three in

During the offseason, he signed a two-year $28 million deal to stay in red pinstripes through 2022. After this season, between his actual performance and his injuries, the 31-year-old doesn’t have a high trade value. The club has a significant amount of money coming off the books at the end of the season that will enable Dombrowski to make some bigger signings than last winter, but he will have to decide if the Phillies should eat the remaining year of Gregorius’ contract or try to move him.
