Before being named Phillies manager back in 2013 after the club had fired legendary manager Charlie Manuel, Ryne Sandberg has put together one heck of a Hall of Fame baseball career. Debuting in MLB with the Phillies in 1981, Sandberg appeared in 13 games in a Phillies uniform.

In those 13 games played with the Phillies in the start of what would be a Hall of Fame career, Sandberg batted .167 in six at-bats. Sandberg would then move on to play for the Chicago Cubs for the remainder of his MLB career — 15 years. To this day, he goes down in Cubs history as one of the greatest players to ever wear a Cubs uniform.

After retiring in 1997, it took 15 years for Sandberg to get back into the big leagues. In 2015, after Sandberg had managed the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate for the past two years, the Phillies announced they had promoted Sandberg to the MLB coaching staff. His role was the third-base coach and infield instructor.

One short year later, Sandberg was named the 52nd manager in franchise history.

The Phillies performed .500 under Sandberg — he would go on to finish managing with a 119-159 win-loss record. His gig with the Phillies would go on to mark his first job as manager in the big leagues, and, as of now his only.

Sandberg resigned in the middle of the 2015 season. He has since been unable to find a job on a major league coaching staff. Most recently, he was named an ambassador to the Chicago Cubs.
