Phillies: Players who looked weird wearing another team’s uniform
Darren Daulton – Florida Marlins (1997)
Darren Daulton played 95.5 percent of his career games in Philadelphia, but he spent the final 52 regular season games of his career with the division rival Florida (as they were known then) Marlins.
Daulton began his big league career with the Phillies in 1983, playing just two games in September and October, but not getting any playoff experience.
He’d have to wait a full season before going back to the big leagues, coming back up for 36 games in 1985. From then until 1989 Daulton played sparingly and hit just .205 with 31 doubles and 24 home runs in 327 games.
He became the full-time starter in ’89 and found his stroke the following season hitting .268 with 30 doubles and 12 home runs. While his bat picked up, so did the fandom surrounding “Dutch.”
In 1992 Daulton led the league with 101 RBI, finished sixth in the MVP race, received his first Silver Slugger, and earned his first of three All-Star appearances.
Daulton would receive top-seven finishes in the MVP race in back-to-back seasons and helped power the 1993 Phillies with 24 home runs, tied with Pete Incaviglia for the team lead.
The next year Dutch hit .300 in just 69 games and in 1995 he made his final All-Star team despite putting up average numbers and dealing with knee injuries. Those injuries would force him to leave the catchers mask for first base and play just five games in 1996.
On July 21, 1997, after 14 years with the Phillies, Daulton was traded to the Florida Marlins for Billy McMillon. In Florida Daulton would win a World Series and hit .389 against the Cleveland Indians and hitting coach Charlie Manuel.
Daulton retired after the ’97 season and was inducted onto the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2010, the first prominent player from the ’93 pennant team to earn the honor.
After two battles with brain cancer, Dutch died on August 6, 2017. He remains one of the all-time favorite Phillies and an all-time leader in franchise history.
