Why McBride shouldn’t make the Wall of Fame

Many will argue that only the best in franchise history should make the Wall of Fame. If you consider that argument, then McBride would have to be one of the top outfielders to put on a Phillies uniform.

Examining McBride’s numbers against other outfielders to put on the red pinstripes, he fails to rank in the top ten in any major statistical category.

More from Phillies History

McBride ranks in the top 20 in only batting average (14th) and stolen bases (19th). His other ranks are 22nd in triples, 23rd in OPS, 26th in hits and doubles and 29th in runs.

One may argue McBride’s low rankings are due to the fact he only played five seasons with the team.  A more fair way to judge would be his 162 game stats.  Therefore, McBride’s full season averages are 31 doubles, nine triples, 13 home runs, 76 RBI and 29 stolen bases.

While those numbers are quite solid, are they among the best in franchise history and Wall of Fame worthy? Likely not.

Yes, McBride will forever be remembered as the starting right fielder for the first World Series winning team in franchise history. That should be applauded, but should that be enough to put McBride on the Wall of Fame?  That’s debatable and one voters shouldn’t take lightly.
