4 – Garry Maddox

Known as “The Secretary of Defense”, Maddox was arguably the best center fielder of his era and one of the best defensive outfielders of all-time. He won eight consecutive Gold Glove awards from 1975 to 1982.  While not a great offensive player, Maddox had nine seasons with 20 or more stolen bases and averaged .290 with double-digit home runs and 70 RBI from 1976 through 1980. Certainly, offensive production seems to outweigh defensive play for All-Star voters, but Maddox should have been awarded at least one All-Star appearance for his remarkable defensive play.
