Pitchers

  1. Max Scherzer
  2. Stephen Strasburg
  3. Gio Gonzalez
  4. Tanner Roark
  5. A.J. Cole

Other names to watch: Erick Fedde, Joe Ross, Jeremy Hellickson

Washington’s starting rotation remains a key strength. Scherzer won his second straight and third overall Cy Young award. Strasburg was a finalist for the award and Gonzalez finished sixth in the voting. All three should not only be among the top starters in the division but the best in the league.

Roark was shaky to start 2017 but was better in the second half with a 3.90 ERA. Cole has emerged as the fifth starter this spring and had a strong showing in the second half as well last year.

Erick Fedde was the other pitcher competing with Cole for the fifth spot, but its unlikely he will get it. He and other pitchers will wind up serving as depth if and when injuries occur.
