Is Velasquez’s last start a sign of things to come?

Vince Velasquez is coming off his best start since the beginning of May. Thursday against the Rockies Velasquez gave up just one run on a solo home run and struck out seven batters. It was just the third time the Phillies won a game started by Velasquez this season.

Velasquez has given up three runs in a start just twice in nine outings this season. Both of those starts have come in May, but other poor starts leave his ERA at 4.94 this month.

This most recent start could be what Velasquez needs to turn his season around. However, he still has some issues to work through.

Obviously, his pitch economy continues to remain an issue as Velasquez gives up a large number of hits while still working deep counts. Velasquez also continues to give up an absurd amount of home runs, allowing home runs on 21.3% of fly balls, the eighth-highest rate among qualified pitchers.
