The Phillies will be glad that they kept Alec Bohm
Of all of the Phillies rumored in trade talks this offseason, none has been as frequent as third baseman Alec Bohm. Whether it was the Phillies attempting to get some quality pitching, or whether they wanted to move a piece to bring in some bigger names through free agency, Bohm found himself in the middle of it all.
However, despite all the talk, the 28-year-old star is still a Phillie and will likely remain as one for the near future. Philadelphia should be thankful for that outcome. Why is that?
Bohm was actually a key piece of the Phillies’ offensive puzzle last season. In 2024, his 44 doubles led Philadelphia, while his 155 hits and 97 RBI ranked second on the team, and his .280 average ranked third. Not only that, Bohm’s fWAR of 3.5 put him third on the Phillies, ahead of the likes of power producers Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Castellanos as well. On top of that, Bohm batted in the heart of the daily lineup for the bulk of the 2024 season.
If Bohm had been moved, who could have made up for such production? Internally, Edmundo Sosa would be perhaps the top candidate to replace him, but he has never recorded more than 10 home runs and 30 RBI in any one season throughout his six-year MLB career. As for potential targets such as Alex Bregman in free agency and Nolan Arenado in the trade market, both star players are actually trending downwards in recent years with both being on the wrong side of 30.
With Bohm heading into his prime at the age of 28, the Phillies could actually have the best option already with the team. He doesn’t become an unrestricted free agent until 2027, and with Spotrac predicting his salary to be around $8.1 million for 2025, Bohm could be one of the best value run producers in the entire league.
So playoff underperformance or not, you don’t trade away a budding star who could break out in a big way any moment now, especially not when the Phillies desperately need him for their World Series runs. As a result, it is definitely a blessing in disguise that Bohm is still a part of the Phillies organization, for now.
