So THERE.

The Phillies’ preseason ended weeks ago, with many players’ fantasies or assumptions coming true. Most of them, however, were escorted out of the picture, asked to not be a part of whatever glory or shame the 2012 squad will bring. No one was more disappointed than Scott Podsednik, who was caught in a grapple for a single bench spot with Juan Pierre, and lost. Sadly, he became aware that he lost several days before Spring Training ended, and was forced to trudge fruitlessly about the Carpenter Complex, pretending to smile when Ruben Amaro and Pierre walked by high-fiving and talking about what an awesome summer it was going to be.

Mercifully, Clearwater-time came to an end, and Scott scraped his crushed dreams together, packed them in a stick and bindle, and road the rails to Lehigh Valley, where he waits, biding his time for the right combination of self production and someone else’s career-ending injury.

Now, now. We all saw this coming.

We all knew that as soon as the media and fans got a sniff of a position battle in Spring Training, a simple matter of numbers and performance would get ballooned into a barbaric castration of souls; a bitter contest as two men struggle to fit in one spot and maintain employment in this grating economy. Their well being, self-respect, and children depend on how well they play baseball for one month before the heat takes hold.

This year, the contest emerged for a bench spot between 2011 MLB caught stealing leader Juan Pierre, who once robbed Barry Bonds of #714, and 2004 MLB stolen base leader Scott Podsednik, who is married to a Playboy Playmate. They both brought their game to Clearwater, giving the writers a chance to craft narratives beyond “Phillies Are Old; Could Still Be Good Though.”

All of that, that I just said. We saw all that coming.

I did not know that this game was supposed to happen. I thought that the Phillies were getting a rare day off this spring after obviously erroneously checking the schedule. Luckily I turned on a television and happened upon Cliff Lee throwing baseballs to Brian Schneider. Apparently the hitters on the Pirates also forgot to check the schedule because they managed only four base runners in Cliff’s six innings of work.

Remember when all of the Philadelphia infielders were injured? I suppose that is sort of still happening as a natural shortstop who has never even played a full season above triple A is going to start the season as the second baseman. (more…)
