Meanwhile, the Phillies avoided looking desperate for bullpen help by grabbing some other guy who just stumbled out of the desert with a 6.00+ ERA.

Mere days after crediting Danys Baez for Antonio Bastardo’s success for some reason, Charlie Manuel and the Phillies said good bye to the usually-terrible reliever through the trusted majesty of DFA’ing.

“I think the biggest improvement in Bastardo is that he has grown up as a pitcher, being around veterans like Baez and Halladay.”

–Charlie Manuel

Well, that makes more sense. If we’re talking about growing up and not actual pitching ability, than yeah; I could see Baez teaching Bastardo how to clean out an A/C unit or change the oil in his car or fill out a tax form or shoot gophers to feed his starving family. These are things a man’s got to know to survive in this world, and because “being alive” is all Baez has been doing for a while, he clearly has the most basic of life skills down. (more…)

Durbin's a concrete addition to any relief corps, but in this case, even he could be deemed superfluous. And not just because I wanted to use that word.

The sporadic, one-sided blasts of romance between the Phillies and Chad Durbin came to a screeching halt the other day when he signed with the Cleveland Indians. The proven solid righty was usually nothing but competent for us and will be missed. However, the real issue is that I will never be able to figure out if my suspicions of him having been in a college playwriting course I took will never be confirmed or denied. (more…)

The Phils cut him loose, leaving the reliable Durbin a mere shadow of his former self--a habitual win-junkie, unable to think of anything but his next chance to suck down some sweet, sweet, victory.

In December 2007, Chad Durbin met the Phillies and it was love at first four-seam fastball. Chad stepped into a pair of bright red cleats and never looked back, providing the spastic bullpen with some flakes of stability throughout three highly successful campaigns. By the end of it, though, the Phils cut him loose, leaving the reliable Durbin a mere shadow of his former self–a habitual win-junkie, unable to think of anything but his next chance to suck down some sweet, sweet, victory.

With the free agent market laying before him, and several mediocre teams on th phone, Chad is discovering one haunting aspect of his time with the WFC: The Phillies are a gateway team. (more…)
