The Phillies ran out Cliff Lee to face Toronto's promising young starter Ricky Romero. Romero's nickname is listed on his baseball reference page as RR Cool Jay.

Wison Valdez started at second base today for the Philadelphia Phillies. Seeing that Wilson Valdez has the ability to play second base and is on the roster for the Phillies, this is hardly a shock. Earlier this week, the Phillies admitted that their all-star second baseman may be out for a little longer than the initial diagnosis of “sore legs” would leave you to believe by signing recently released second baseman Luis Castillo. (more…)

One player typifies my love for absurd names (No, not Dickie Thon): Oil Can Boyd.

In my youth, I was not a huge baseball card collector. Most of my forays into the collecting world settled around cards with names that I found amusing. One player typifies my love for absurd names (No, not Dickie Thon): Oil Can Boyd. How the hell did someone get named Oil Can? His real name is Dennis Ray Boyd. My ten year old brain could not comprehend how this ridiculous nickname was deemed acceptable for print on something that could conceivably last for eternity. Looking back, I do not think ole’ Oil Can had the best judgement based on his institutionalization for his temper tantrum for missing the all-star team in the mid-eighties. But his name was OIL CAN….seriously! (more…)

I don’t need to explained what happened next.

EDITOR’S NOTE: So you obviously saw my sob story the other day (yesterday?) about how I’m busy and can’t update every time I want to, even though my attempts at using my brain to write a blog post from across the room are getting stronger every day. No sooner had I posted my pity party, and young squire Pat O’Donnell drops this guest post in my inbox. So here are his thoughts on Benny Fresh taking the reins in’11.

In 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies were in on the CC Sabathia Sweepstakes, and when they had to settle for Joe Blanton instead some fans may have packed it in early… but urgh, they may have had to jump back on a few months later when that same Heavy B went 4-0 in the regular season for his new ballclub and that same team was pulling the Easter Bunny himself out of their collective magic hat as they swept the Brewers in 4 games to go from 4.0 GB of the Wildcard to tied for the lead WITH the tie-breaker.

I don’t need to explain what happened next. (more…)
