Heading into the season Adam Morgan was regarded as a top five prospect in the Phillies organization. Now he is just the latest hopeful to get off to a shaky start and wind up hurt.

So far this season, Morgan had struck out 29 batters in 41 and two-thirds innings giving him a 6.3 SO/9. Last season Morgan was striking out the opposing batters to the tune of 9.6 per nine innings. What a difference a year can make. I am getting pretty sick of this injury nonsense. I guess that is just how this prospect game works though.

According to Jim “Steaks” Salisbury, Morgan will not get surgery. Instead the 23-year-old will try to rehab his shoulder with some medical science from the future. The plan is for him to either get a palette rich plasma injection or a cortisone injection sometime next week. I am no doctor, but I would go with the plasma injection mostly because it sounds cooler. Ladies love things that sound cooler.

Morgan won’t start pitching again for a few weeks. We here at That Ball’s Outta Here wish him a speedy recovery because the hopes and dreams we have for this team ever being good again depend on it.

More roster tinkering will most likely take place today, as when Ruben Amaro begins moving those chess pieces designed to look like Phillies players on his sinister-looking board he keeps inside the globe in his office, he usually doesn't quite after two moves.

The Phillies are starting to make cuts from the preseason camp, ending the dreams of fringe players who showed up with a realistic grasp of their chances but that nagging voice in their heads whispering, “…maybe.“

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The result was maybe not for a couple of guys today.

The Phillies have released OF Joe Mather.

— Todd Zolecki (@ToddZolecki) March 9, 2013

First was outfielder Joe Mather, a 30-year-old journeyman who has failed to catch on anywhere but Chicago, where he barfed out a .209 batting average last year. In 12 plate appearances this spring, he failed to reach the .100 threshold, simmering out with a .091. He struck out four times, but also walked once, which we all know was definitely the reason Ruben had no qualms with cutting him loose.

Ruben Amaro says LHP Adam Morgan has been reassigned to minor-league camp. More moves likely later today.

— Bob Brookover (@brookob) March 9, 2013

Also gone is Adam Morgan, though as a top Phillies prospect, he was simply reassigned to the minors, where he will wait for the majority of his friends at Phillies camp to join him.

Adam actually had an aesthetically pleasing spring with the Phillies. He threw 4.2 innings and kept his ERA under 2.00. he allowed five hits, two walks, K’d six, and allowed a single earned run. He probably spent most of camp having nods of approval sent his way. Morgan had a deep interest in some of the Phillies’ brains, namely Cole Hamels. The duo were apparently comparing grips of their change-ups, which would be like Roy Halladay showing you his stairs or Cliff Lee showing you his hog-killin’ gun.

More roster tinkering will most likely take place today, as when Ruben Amaro begins moving those chess pieces designed to look like Phillies players on his sinister-looking board he keeps inside the globe in his office, he usually doesn’t quite after two moves.

Because they got their hopes up too high due to skewed expectations from top 100 lists or they're going to be shipped out in the Great 10-team Giancarlo Stanton Deal of 2013.

These top 100 lists brutal the past few weeks, as we now have 300 slots available to illustrate just how unattractive the Phillies farm system has become.

Ethan Martin and Glove, his fatihful glove. Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

But it’s not really a whole thing to get aggressive and angry and just way too aggressive about. These prospects are either going to surprise everyone with production from nowhere or disappoint everyone because they got their hopes up too high due to skewed expectations from top 100 lists or they’re going to be shipped out in the Great 10-team Giancarlo Stanton Deal of 2013.

Baseball America dished out it’s top 100 list this afternoon, and it went a little something… like this:

89. Jesse Biddle

100. Roman Quinn

MLB.com chimed in a few weeks ago.

60. Jesse Biddle

80. Ethan Martin

And ESPN’s Keith Law took his turn at the beginning of the month.

92. Adam Morgan

95. Jesse Biddle

Now, if you look at these one at a time, you can see that yes, the Phillies have a pitiful number of blue chip prospects available for development or trade. However, a second glance tells us that the Phillies actually have four nationally recognized prospects considered in the best 100 minor league players in the country!

Huzzah!

Sadly, this is the state of a minor league system after the fact. And those facts are Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Hunter Pence, and to a far lesser extent, Ben Revere. In the mean time, though, we can push all of our top rated prospects together into a single mound and marvel at the lump of pitchers and a shortstop we’ve created and will seemingly grow to depend on.
