Freddy Galvis made two errors in the Phillies’ 5-4 loss to the Cubs Thursday, and his hurting hand probably had something to do with it.

The final play of Thursday night’s game between the Cubs and Phillies ended on an error. More specifically, Freddy Galvis missed a throw to first base trying to convert a double play, allowing Albert Amora, Jr. to score and win the game for the Cubs.

It was one of two errors during the game for Galvis as he made another throwing error earlier in the game trying to convert another double play. That error did not result in a run, but it was another stain on Galvis’ usually flawless defensive record.

"“It’s really frustrating. I made two mistakes and we lost the game. Of course I feel bad. I want to win every single game.“It’s a speedy guy at home plate. I tried to make the out. Just threw it out of target.”"

Manager Pete Mackanin told reporters the errors “shocked” him. Galvis made just eight errors in 1350 innings last season and was a Gold Glove finalist.

However, the errors aren’t as shocking when you consider the fact that Galvis was icing his hand in the locker room after the game.

Reporters asked about his hand, and this is what Galvis did according to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly:

"As Galvis spoke to reporters, he cradled an ice-filled white sanitary stocking in his right hand. He was clearly icing his throwing hand. Yet, when asked about it, he hid the ice pack behind his back.“It’s good,” he said."

Galvis has never been one to complain about an injury. He hasn’t been on the disabled list since 2014 when he broke his collarbone and had a staph infection earlier on during the season. Since Jimmy Rollins was traded, Galvis has been in the starting lineup nearly every day.

Friday night may be the ideal time to give Galvis his first day out of the lineup this season. He has played in every game since the season started. This would Galvis a chance to rest his seemingly hurting hand as well as gives a couple at-bats to Andres Blanco, who has just 17 plate appearances so far this year.

We don’t want to see Galvis make any more throwing errors, and when he’s healthy he makes very few of them. This may be something small or nothing at all, but if Galvis is truly hurting, it’ll be good to nip it in the bud before it gets any worse.
