Miami had been widely considered Jeremy Hellickson’s landing spot

Despite multiple dominating starts by Phillies pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, the right-hander still remains a member of the Phillies rotation.

One team who has been linked to Hellickson the most is the Miami Marlins, a team desperately searching for help in their rotation.

They got an up close look at Hellickson when he dominated them own their own field last week.

Unfortunately for Phillies General Manager Matt Klentak, it appears Miami may be out of the Hellickson sweepstakes.

Miami has traded for Padres starter Andrew Cashner, who was one of the top names on the pitching market this summer. The Marlins will send a package of minor leaguers for the 29-year-old Cashner.

With this trade being complete, it appears the biggest fish in on the Hellickson trade talks could be dead.

Hellickson is believed to be the second option for teams looking to make a splash at the trade deadline. He’s likely to be a back-end of the rotation guy for a team looking to make a run at the playoffs.

Several other teams reportedly remain interested in Hellickson, including the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants.

Many have speculated the Phillies could opt to keep Hellickson, and in turn receive first round draft pick compensation. Having a pick ranging in the late 30’s to early 40’s in the draft could be huge for the Phillies development.

Because of the draft scenario, the Phillies are reportedly asking for a “top five prospect” in return for Hellickson. Whether or not they can get that for a mediocre starter in the final year of his contract is yet to be seen.

Matt Klentak, you’re on the clock.
