With his single in the fifth inning, Jimmy Rollins passed Mike Schmidt to become the Philadelphia Phillies’ all-time leader in hits. Rollins tied Schmidt at 2,234 last night, and with today’s hit, he upped his total to 2,235 to seize the top spot for himself.
Schmidt was on hand at the game, and immediately ran onto the field to congratulate Rollins on his accomplishment.
Owning the franchise’s all-time hits record will look very good on Rollins’ resume when voters eventually debate his candidacy for the Hall of Fame. Fortunately for Rollins and the Phillies, he’ll still likely have another few years to further enhance that resume.
