Phillies to Sign Wil Nieves and Somehow Get Even Older

According to Jon Heyman, the Phillies have agreed to a deal with catcher Wil Nieves:

Terms of the deal are currently unknown, but the assumption is that Nieves will serve as the Phillies’ backup catcher.

This is bad news for fans of Erik Kratz.  Kratz was expected to battle rookie Cameron Rupp for the backup spot in 2014.  But with this signing, Rupp will likely start the season with AAA and Kratz may have to find employment elsewhere.  This is also bad news for people who wanted to see the Phillies get younger this offseason.  At 36 years of age, Nieves will somehow increase the average age of the roster.

For his career, Nieves has a .242 batting average with a .597 OPS and eight home runs.  Those numbers are certainly nothing special, but I don’t know how many backup catchers exist who do have special offensive numbers.
