Yes, you read that right – MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki is reporting that Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is close to hiring a sabermetrician for the front office, reinforcing his statements from last month about the Phillies using more statistical analysis in decisions moving forward.
Depending on the hire, this could be the most important signing of the offseason, and even more importantly, the FIRST.
The fact that this person is going to be hired (hopefully) before the free agent signing period starts, should signal that this person will play some role in signings this offseason.
To this point, the only person employed by the Phillies they consider a “stats” guy is the poor man tracking pitches behind home plate during games, so this is a marked improvement.
Ruben still says that the Phillies are very much a scouting and player development organization, but presuming his ears are actually open to this additional input, this is a very positive sign for the 2014 season.
Unconfirmed reports that Jonah Hill is the top candidate for the job.
Will report back with more news.
