Morning, everyone. I happened to write an article for GUFS ( gearupforsports.com ) called "Phils v. Yanks: World Series Preview?" but I hope your venom wasn't meant for me. The gist of my article is that you can't have a meaningful World Series Preview in June. I despise Interleague play in part because it sets up false ideas like this.

If the Phillies and Yankees both manage to make it back to the World Series, it will be because both teams played well enough to get there. That will take some serious improvement for the Phils. Our offense will have to show up for one thing. Thus, the team that could make it to the World Series might have the same players but it would hardly be the same team.

I got a little off track because I happened to read the "probables" just like you did. How someone can be so brutal about Jaime Moyer after one terrible game is beyond me. In fact, our "slump" is not because of poor pitching even though we've pitched terribly against the Red Sox and badly against the Yankees. It is because the offense decided to take an unscheduled vacation and because our defense has been spotty.

Luckily, history does suggest that we will play much better when this Interleague nonsense goes away for another year. I hope our team's management screams bloody murder about this morphing of MLB into the NFL every year at the GM meetings.

Without Interconference play, the Phils would likely win another 10-15 games per year.

I don't know what the mystery is, Klugh. What's so difficult to get a handle on? It's two months into the season. Either Utley is seriously injured (doubt it) or his career is over (look at his trends the last three seasons if you don't believe me). Howard is hitting for a high enough average that he should be absolutely mashing; he isn't, which tells me that he's well into the downslide of his career now (look at his trends the last three seasons if you don't believe me). There's more, but without those two this is a BAD team. I hate it as much as you do, but it's going to be a long summer if you're waiting for them to get better.
