It does not matter any more, the Padres traded Meredith last night to the Orioles for just a utility player in Oscar Salazar. I knew it would be nothing big, so why did the Phils not jump at the opportunity?

The Padres would not willingly jump in on a deal that didn't involve some prospects and not another contract coming back to them. They shed a $1M contract in Jody Gerut earlier this season, they're not likely to take back anything but prospects.

That being said, the offer to Toronto is interesting. I'd wonder if the Jays wouldn't lower their price to just the prospects if the Phillies took back Alex Rios' contract. Still, trading Victorino intrigues me. Both him and Rios are similar in age (Victorino a bit older) but Victorino is still under team control for another two years for arbitration money. If he can pump out 4 WAR seasons, he may be worth it.

Then again, that would involve the Jays giving up on Rios after a bad half season. His previous three seasons, he racked up 17 wins and some $55M worth. It would be difficult for them to part with that. They'd much rather part with Wells, but Wells' contract is so bad compared to two seasons of production that there's no way they'll unload him.
